Chicago State University opened its doors as a teacher training school in a leaky railroad freight car in Blue Island, Illinois on September 2, 1867. Today, in contrast, the university is a fully accredited public, urban institution located on 161-picturesque acres in a residential community on the Southside of Chicago. During the first year of its founding, CSU enrolled 62 students. The current student enrollment is nearly 7,200.
Coppin State University is a model urban, residential liberal arts university located in the northwest section of the City of Baltimore that provides academic programs in the arts and sciences, teacher education, nursing, graduate studies, and continuing education. An HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), Coppin has a culturally rich history as an institution providing quality educational programs and community outreach services. Coppin offers 53 majors and nine graduate-degree programs. A fully accredited institution, Coppin serves Baltimore residents as well as students from around the world, with flexible course schedules that include convenient day, evening, and weekend classes and distance learning courses.
Coppin was founded in 1900 at what was then called Colored High School (later named Douglass High School) on Pennsylvania Avenue by the Baltimore City School Board who initiated a one-year training course for the preparation of African-American elementary school teachers. By 1902, the training program was expanded to a two-year Normal Department within the high school, and seven years later it was separated from the high school and given its own principal.

Grambling State University emerged from the desire of African-American farmers in rural north Louisiana who wanted to educate Black children in the northern and western parts of the state. The 375-acre campus is nestled in the heart of Grambling, Louisiana, a small but growing community located in Lincoln Parish. The University is five miles west of Ruston and is within easy driving distance of the large cities of Shreveport and Monroe.
Grambling State University combines all the strengths of a major university with the personality of a small college, thereby allowing students to grow and learn in a serene and positive environment. The campus houses students in its 19 residence halls, enhances and promotes student life through its impressive student union and bookstore, and appeals to other areas of life and improvement through buildings such as the dining hall, library, intramural center, and health center. More than 800 courses and 68 degree programs are offered at Grambling. There are five colleges, including an honors college, two professional schools, a graduate school, and a Division of Continuing Education. National and local employers recruit graduates from Grambling’s excellent nursing, computer science, teacher education, and other programs.
